Atomic Bombs

Totally amazed at how much information about the effects that the atomic bomb would have and they decide that this is the way to get Japan to declare defeat. Well how could they not when it wiped out so many people. Stimson tells us that "In 1941 and 1942 they were believed to be ahead of us and it was vital that they should not be the first to bring atomic weapons into the field of battle." So is this justification (from Shue's article), that the United States should be the first to use atomic weapons? He goes on to say that at no time from 1941 to when the bombs were used in 1945 did he hear anyone say they should not use them. By anyone, it is from President Roosevelt to the other governmental members that he was working with the developmental of the atomic bombs. I could not believe the data they knew ahead of bombings and they still used them, just because they wanted to be the first to use atomic weapons in warfare. I am reminded of Calhouns article in regards to moral responsibilty when Stimson says, "The world in it's present state of moral advancement compared with its technical development would be eventually at the mercy of such a weapon. In other words, modern civilization might be completely destroyed." Stimson's article was right to the point of the use of the atomic bombs and went into the thought process of its effects as well, and they still used it because it was Stimsons job to end the war with the least amount of casualty to the US. At the end of his article he even says that he did not "gloss" over any of the facts, because war is death and the atomic weapons allow man to destroy himself, and that war should never happen again.
